Don’t Ever-Never, Let Your Stylists Dictate Their Pay Because Most Of Them HATE YOU! This one really drives me crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why do so many salon owners let let their stylists dictate their pay? Here’s you Mr/Mrs salon owner trying to be fair and nice. You have all the stress of running a salon, looking after budgets paying the rent. All your stylists want is more and more and more! They DON'T CARE! Now listen this has got to stop!! Its simple you only have 3 things to think about
Unless you have those 3 things you cannot run a mega-successful salon that wipes the floor in your town. Obvious? yep you bet but if your paying out 50,55 even 65% in commissions how an earth are you going to motivate your team! All the money has gone to the stylists, so they get bored and leave right!
All these things sound familiar? well if they do you need to sit on the end of the bed and say to yourself "WHAT AN EARTH AM I DOING". Look 55% 45% 65% yep nice commissions but they don’t mean zilch unless they have are used against the cut and finish price right! So just ask your stylist when they want a pay rise or new commission "how much would you like to earn because I will pay you what ever you want!”. Watch their faces then when they tell you, (but I bet they can't) I want to earn this much cash, you can say OK well all you have to take is this.......Then you can look at the commission rate to fit into your business (not their dreams)!!! I get sick to death of this commission war they only focus on the percentages not on what they are taking otherwise they would ask for $2000 dollars of what ever a month RIGHT! not 55% Get them focused on making their clients look and feel fantastic increase their average bill and your on a winner "both of you" A Real Life Salon Story About Loony-Tunes Stylist Lynda, The Secret Stock Room and Stressed-Out-Me This lady was an average stylist that worked for me donkeys ago. She was a typical stylist. You know thought the whole of my 15 years of hard work building business was down to her although she'd only been with me 6 months and to be frank ... would have been better cutting grass than hair! Anyway here is what this nutter used to do ... One very busy Saturday she would come up to me in the salon and say ... "meet me in the stock room in 5 minutes" Blimey! So 5-minutes later we'd both be crammed into the stock room. She would then hurriedly tell me that if I didn't pay her more ... she was on her way out. After all she had trained her mad-brain to believe she WAS THE SALON. You'll know the type of crackpot. When you are under fast pressure like that what do you do? I wanted to kill her with my hairdryer cord there and then, dig a hole in the secret stock room and bury under a mountain of cotton-wool and empty tint tubes ... ... But ... the salon was packed and to be truthful I didn't have my spade. I gave her more cash... durghhh! This started to happen probably once a month at least. Me being a typical salon owner always thought well if I give her more she'll stay. Big mistake! BIG ONE. One Saturday in particular she did it again. 5-minutes in the stock room. Same old story. She said she'd leave tonight if I didn't increase her wages. I told her ... You are suffering from serious psychiatric illness probably related to over sniffing of perm solution, get your stuff and get lost. Leave tonight. Haha ... caught her out and she nearly freaked. She left that night. 6:45am next morning (on a Sunday) I had her husband on the phone begging me to re-employ her and how sorry she was. For him and him only ... she was back the week after. 2-months down the road it all started again. weeks after that I kicked her out. She tried to sue me and lost. After all she was a total freakin nutcase. Does that story sound familiar? Listen to this and listen good. Do yourself a monster favor. If it ever gets to that stage ... GET RID of losers like her! They'll cost you more in stress in the long term. They make your whole salon unsettled. Truth is those types couldn't care less if they destroy your salon, they just walk away. Ok, me outta here. catch you all soon. Steve...
